I think George Bush will be remembered by history as one of the top 2 Presidents in United States history when judging the office in terms of the gravitas as "Commander-in-Chief" (Lincoln being the other). I can't think of any other Presidents who would be in the same ballpark of respectability as a commander.
I was never in the military, but I knew several people who were in the military during the Bush administration who had a tremendous amount of respect for him. He is a true war hero, a true lover of this nation and his military decisions were sensible. Most presidents either didn't get tested with war as President, made really poor military decisions as President, or made cowardly choices in their youth in order to avoid the front lines when they were needed by their country. Bush passed all the tests of a great military President.
On top of that, as someone who did not serve in the military, I found his explanations to the American people to be very informative on why America had to take military actions. This video is further proof of his ability to connect the importance of military action to the American people.
